Program Note: To Piano was commissioned by Greg Oakes and is inspired by the architectural style of Renzo Piano (particularly the Krause Gateway Center in Des Moines, Iowa). The title of the piece has (at least) a double meaning: 1) as a tribute to the name of the architect and 2) to indicate my work’s companionship with Helmut Lachenmann’s solo clarinet composition Dal niente. The ascending multiphonic progressions and microtonal motivic expansions throughout To Piano are intended to mirror the open spaces and specific external linear designs of Piano’s Krause Center.
