Program Note: Lamassu was written for and premiered by Michael Hall (viola) and the composer (alto saxophone) at the New Music Gathering 2017 at Bowling Green State University (12 May 2017). A lamassu is an Assyrian protective deity often depicted as having a human head, a body of an ox or lion, and bird's wings. Large lamassu figures are stunning showpieces of Assyrian sculpture. The composition intends to evoke this terrifying mythological creature and the ancient culture from which it arose.
